homemade oatmeal cookies

This oatmeal cookie recipe is from my grandpa. He ate a bowl of warm oatmeal every morning for breakfast. He loved oatmeal so much that his favorite cookie was also… oatmeal cookies!

I love how this recipe is hearty and chewy, thanks to the good old fashioned oats in the recipe. Don’t use instant oatmeal packets, quick oats, or steel cut; these are just regular uncooked old fashioned oats. The good news is that oats are high in fiber, so you can even pretend that these cookies are healthy.

If you’re in the mood for oatmeal cookies, but it’s just too hot to cook (or you need a sweet treat sooner than these can bake), try Dave’s famous no bake cookies.

Recipe Variations

This classic homemade oatmeal cookie recipe is super adaptable too. See below in the Notes for ideas on how to turn this recipe in to many different varieties of cookies, all with this tried-and-true base recipe.

Ingredients

  • butter or shortening
  • brown sugar (for a caramel type flavor to the dough)
  • sugar
  • egg
  • vanilla
  • water (gives the dough some moisture to create chewy cookies)
  • salt
  • flour (just a bit, to give the dough a good consistency)
  • baking soda
  • oatmeal (old fashioned rolled oats; don’t use instant, quick, or steel cut)

These cookies are so yummy because they are the perfect caramel tasting chewy oatmeal cookies. Not too dense, not too flat. The extra little bit of flour and tiny bit of water in the dough is just the right touch to create a chewy oatmeal cookie. Hope you like it just as much as we do.

This recipe is so yummy, and hopefully made easy for you to make too.
